About Childrens Museum of Acadiana
The Children's Museum of Acadiana (CMA) is a hands-on participatory museum serving children and their families, schools, and community organizations by providing interactive exhibits, special services, performances, and workshops.
The Children's Musuem of Acadiana was envisioned by three women, developed for children, supported by Acadiana residents and lovingly built by local busniesses. The founders and trustees are Renee Miller, Mitzi Domino and Marvita Hudson. The dedicated trio has spent years, time and energy bringing their dream of a local Children's Museum to fruition, exceeding all of their own expectations. Miller's intial thought after visiting the Children's Museum in New Orleans in the late 80's was that Lafayette should have one of its own. By January of 1990, the Children's Museum of Acadiana was incorporated as a private, non-profit organization and community outreach began. In March 1993 the old Heymann Food Center building was purchased and a rededication service was held making 201 East Congress the museum's permanent home. Civic clubs, restaurants, businesses, contractors, architects, plumbers, electricians, decorators, painters, and construction personnel donated over $1.5 millon in renovations. Only $100,000 in actual cash was spent. Three years later the CMA had its Grand Opening.
